Skate Egg Case

Beringraja binoculata produces a casing that shields its eggs, known as a mermaid's purse. This egg case is characteristic of oviparous sharks, skates, and chimaeras. Typically, one embryo develops inside an egg case, but the big skate and mottled skate have cases containing up to seven embryos.
