Sivatherium, meaning "Shiva's beast," was a genus of giraffid that roamed freely throughout Africa to the Indian Subcontinent. The largest giraffid known, Sivatherium giganteum, weighed heavily and possibly stood as the largest ruminant in all history. The Afro-Asiatic species, S. maurusium, was once mistakenly grouped within the genus "Libytherium". S. giganteum remains were found in the Himalayan foothills, dating back around 1,000,000 years ago. S. maurusium may have gone extinct as recently as 8,000 years ago, as ancient rock paintings discovered in the Sahara and Central West India depict it with striking resemblance. This object was examined by fossils in Shropshire
