Lingam forms a key aspect of Shiva's iconic imagery and represents male genitalia while Yoni stands for the vagina which is considered feminine part of human beings representing cosmic fertility. The combined figure has three faces. The left face symbolizes Shakti or Sati - Devotees pray before it for knowledge of reality to free themselves from life and death. In between these faces sits Parvathi (the benevolent, loving half). Her middle third symbolises union with divine consciousness as a couple transcending beyond mortal realms in cosmic ecstasy. The combined representation transcends all opposites like existence and non-existence which are reflected as various aspects of human nature that unite.
