Du Bois studied under the tutelage of Eugène Simonis and Charles van der Stappen, laying the groundwork for his future artistic endeavors. He received the prestigious Prix Godecharle in 1884 after honing his craft at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. Du Bois played a pivotal role in revitalizing Belgium's artistic scene in the late 20th century, and was an integral co-founder of the esteemed art collective Les XX. His diverse body of work encompasses intricate small sculptures, exquisite medals, stunning jewelry, majestic fine art sculpture, monumental public monuments, and elaborate tombs. The contemporary attire and relaxed stance of this sculpture's model might lead us to categorize it as a reflection of the realism movement in art, which emerged towards the end of the 19th century. Realist artists sought to challenge the conventional academic art that solely drew inspiration from ancient models and "noble" themes, opting instead to depict everyday life. Many realist works prominently feature social commentary, highlighting the deplorable living conditions of society's lower classes.
