Sitting Figure

Chadwick's artistic journey was marked by a self-taught approach, with no formal education in sculpting. Drawing upon his experience as an architectural drafter, he innovatively applied his skills to create striking sculptures through welding. He developed a distinctive technique that merged rigid form with the dynamic energy of his earlier works, crafting an "armature" of interlocking steel rods and a composition method that highlighted the expressive potential of frameworks and skeletal structures. This approach allowed him to build robust, tactile bodies for his figures. Chadwick's sculptures evolved from intricate mobiles to insect forms, animal silhouettes, and groups of male and female figures, all crafted using geometric space frames which he referred to as "drawing in steel rods." His works were executed in iron, bronze, and steel, showcasing a mastery of materials that pushed the boundaries of his art.
