Sir William Wallace led a fierce Scottish resistance during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Alongside Andrew Moray, he triumphantly defeated an English army at Stirling Bridge in September 1297. Elevated to Guardian of Scotland, Wallace served until his crushing defeat at Falkirk in July 1298. Captured in Robroyston near Glasgow in August 1305, Wallace was turned over to King Edward I of England and brutally executed for high treason against English civilians. His legendary status transcends borders since his death. The protagonist of Blind Harry's epic poem The Wallace, he has inspired literary works by Sir Walter Scott and Jane Porter, as well as the Academy Award-winning film Braveheart in 1995.
