James Henry Greathead (August 6, 1844 – October 21, 1896) was a highly respected civil engineer celebrated for his pioneering work on the London Underground railway system. In January 1994, a stunning bronze statue honoring him was installed outside the Bank station adjacent to the Royal Exchange in the heart of the City of London. The Lord Mayor of London proudly unveiled this impressive tribute, which is strategically positioned atop a pedestal cleverly disguising a ventilation shaft for the Underground network. During a recent renovation of Bank Station, archaeologists uncovered a significant section of the Barlow-Greathead shield buried within a passageway connecting the Underground with the Waterloo and City Railway. The salvaged piece has been beautifully restored to its original glory and adorned with a shiny brass plate as a testament to Greathead's remarkable contributions to engineering history.
