Sir Henry Tate, 1st Baronet, a renowned English sugar merchant and philanthropist, was born on March 11, 1819, in White Coppice near Chorley, Lancashire. He became a millionaire through his innovative method of sugar refining and by selling sugar in sleek white cubes. In 1889, Tate offered to donate an impressive collection of contemporary British art to the National Gallery. However, the gallery lacked suitable space for these masterpieces, so Tate generously funded the construction of a new gallery at Millbank, which was inaugurated in 1897.
