Single Central Magnet Motor Actuator Generator (SCM MAG)
cults3d
Human: The SCM MAG 3D printed motor can be used as a motor, actuator or generator. The unique design feature is using one single magnet in the rotor and two coils wrapped around the rotor. A Principle of Operation: The operation of this device relies on the interaction between conductors carrying current and a permanent magnet inside each coil. When voltage is applied to the coil, the magnet rotates 90 degrees. Turning on the second coil causes the magnet to rotate another 90 degrees. Details: The rotor consists of a central magnet and shaft. The stator comprises two coils at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. SCM MAG is composed of several 3D printed parts, a magnet, bearings, shaft, and two coils. Motor: For use as a motor, I recommend increasing the wire diameter in the coils. Choose a suitable diameter based on traction force and temperature requirements. If high torque is planned, consider using more heat-resistant filament types. You can also calculate coil current to prevent operating temperatures from exceeding ABS plastic's melting point. The motor requires a feedback system along with a driver. Motor power depends solely on coil current and magnet parameters. Longer magnets result in higher traction characteristics. Actuator: For the actuator, wire diameter requirements are similar to those for the motor. However, since the actuator operates in start-stop mode, selecting a larger wire diameter is crucial. The diameter should be about 10-15 percent larger than that of the motor. By using a driver and tracking system, you can achieve precise rotation or any desired turns of the shaft. Generator: I used AWG32 (0.2mm wire) with 100 turns in each coil. Adding some soft magnetic iron around the stator will alter the magnetic field path and increase generator efficiency. You can also create a modular generator by placing single generators around the circumference, connected through belts or gears for low RPM operation. This device utilizes a neodymium magnet (N38) with a height of 30mm and diameter of 10mm. The magnet is designed for a 4mm shaft, but other shaft diameters are possible. https://youtu.be/aCEUKgyNtCs
