Single Acting Cylinder

In reciprocating engines, a single-acting cylinder employs the working fluid acting on one piston side only. The piston's reverse motion is facilitated by the load, other cylinders, or a flywheel's momentum. Single-action cylinders are widespread in internal combustion engines like petrol and diesel, as well as external combustion engines such as Stirling and steam engines. They also feature in pumps and hydraulic cylinders.
