The Hurricane II B was equipped with bomb racks, carrying capacities of either two 250 lb or two 500 lb bombs; this reduced its top speed to 301 mph (484 km/h). Despite this, mixed operations of Hurricanes protected by fighter screens were common. The same racks could also accommodate two 45-gallon drop tanks, significantly increasing the Hurricane's fuel capacity. The Hurricane Mk IIA Series 2 featured a new, longer propeller spinner and wing-mounted 12 .303 in (7.7 mm) Browning machine guns. The first aircraft were constructed in October 1940 and were later redesignated as Mark IIB in April 1941.
