Simplified Canton Tower (广州塔)
thingiverse
The Guangzhou Tower (formally known as the Guangzhou TV Astronomical and Sightseeing Tower), a 604-metre multi-purpose observation tower, stands tall in Haizhu District, Guangzhou city, historically known as Canton. Completed in 2009, it began operating on September 29, 2010, during the Asian Games. The tower briefly held the world's tallest title before being surpassed by Tokyo Skytree. Prior to the Shanghai Tower's completion, it was China's tallest structure. Today, it ranks second among towers and fourth-tallest freestanding structures globally. The design of this remarkable tower was a collaborative effort between Information Based Architecture and Arup. Led by structural engineer Prof. Dr. Joop Paul, the Arup team employed near mass customization in conjunction with parametric design methods to create an innovative joint design concept. A simple yet effective structural approach consisting of three elements - columns, rings, and braces - was applied to this complex geometry. A digital STL file was created using Grasshopper Parametric for Rhino to facilitate 3D printing. This simplified design showcases the tower's striking architecture. As a Guangzhou enthusiast, I was inspired to create this design, which celebrates the city's vibrant culture.
