There are numerous filament runout sensors on the market today, but they often fall short in their functionality. Many optical sensors fail to work with all types of filaments, while mechanical switch sensors tend to be unreliable or overly complicated due to multiple parts. This minimalist sensor design is a refreshing alternative that requires only one print and three additional components. Firstly, you'll need a specific micro switch, such as the URBESTAC 250V 5A SPDT 1NO 1NC Momentary Hinge Roller Lever Micro Switches 3 Pins. This particular switch has been specifically designed for this purpose, ensuring that 1.75mm filament will consistently trigger it. In addition to the micro switch, you'll also need two self-tapping M2 12mm screws to secure it in place. Simply use the two pilot holes provided and the switch will be perfectly positioned. Next, wire up the three contacts to your Raspberry Pi GPIO board (pwr, ground, and an input line), and you'll never experience filament depletion again.
