Create small solid shapes with a size of approximately 2-3cm or scale them larger to your preference. Import the object, select and adjust its size as desired, then switch to edit mode. Select a face on the object and press keypad * / to bring it forward into local mode. Next, use alt-keypad-0 to move the camera back to its original position while retaining the selected face. Return to global mode by tabbing and pressing keypad-/ and then finish editing with ctrl-alt-keypad-0. To make the camera the object's parent, press shift-rmb to add the camera to the selection and then use ctrl-p. Now, change the view to your preferred alignment using keypad-7 (top view in this example). Move both the camera and object to their new position with ctrl-alt-keypad-0. Unparent the object by pressing alt-p while retaining its transformations. If the object has an odd number of sides, rotate it 180 degrees about an axis to place the selected face at the bottom. Finally, apply scale and rotation data to the object by going to Object -> Clear/Apply -> Apply Scale/Rotation Data to Object or press ctrl-a 1. The object is now fully modified and can be exported as STL for printing.
