Simple Outline Example
grabcad
In a Spartan Helmet remake, the outline around the helmet is made using these steps: firstly, create your desired shape; secondly, sketch the shape you want to wrap around the surface; thirdly, use a split line to create new model faces on the surface; fourthly, apply Knit or Offset Surface tool to create a surface body; fifthly, insert Boss/Base Thicken to thicken your surface into a solid body using the "middle" direction option and Merge feature (if adding mass) or not (to remove material); sixthly, for material removal, choose Subtract in Insert - Feature - Combine; finally, beware that this method is fast but not perfect as Thicken command may cause uneven results. Another method using Swept Feature with tangent option is demonstrated in recent Airplane Part I post and was used to create details on spaceship wings and fins.
