Simple Optical Filament Runout Sensor

Simple Optical Filament Runout Sensor

This is the result of a weekend project that turned out to be quite impressive. I used an optical endstop switch, similar to this one http://www.geeetech.com/images/v/Geeetech_IMG_5412.jpg, which simply guides the filament through it. The endstop is connected to a Raspberry Pi running Octoprint, which takes care of parking and resuming with precision using the Filament Sensor Plugin http://plugins.octoprint.org/plugins/filament_sensor . This setup works perfectly with all 1.75 mm filaments - just drill it out a bit to use 3mm, but don't try it with transparent ones. I might design another version with a mechanical endstop in the future. Printer Settings Printer: Prusa i3 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.2 mm Infill: 20%
