Simple Medieval Castle in Various Bits and Pieces

Simple Medieval Castle in Various Bits and Pieces

This is a small basic castle that is built around a keep with three levels. Everything was designed to print out in 1:72 scale on a 22x22cm printing plate. I finished the last bits (the round towers) about two years ago and then I was all set to go print it all out. Except that I never did. I did have the time (and the space.....and the filament) to print out two smashing dioramas in 1:144 scale i.e. scaled down to 50% of originally intended size. One of these is shown in the pictures here. But my 1:72 scale castle remains a Work-in-Progress even today :) Plus, I used everything here to create some virtual dioramas to compete with my real ones. That was a lot of fun and I really recommend trying it. Note that you do need to book some substantial production capacity on your printer if you want to print a castle like the one in my diorama, even in 1:144 scale. Depending on what you want, many tower and wall segments need to be printed out over and over again ! The other thing that I thought of when designing this castle was a model railroad display. In that case just scale down to from 1:72 to 1:87 and see what you get ! Some of the details I would do differently today, e.g. the walls were supposed to be made of brick but the brick size was much too large - something I only realized when using it in a virtual diorama. But I am pretty happy with it overall.
