A compact little piece of equipment - the humble door latch! Its function is simple and straightforward: to open or shut the door by pressing a small bar downwards. That's it, nothing more. However, this everyday object has had its moments in history, like the swinging gate in Ancient Egypt, the intricate hinges of a Persian Palace Door, and even the sliding screens of the Japanese traditional houses. And if we travel back further in time to 3500 BC - well then there were those incredible swing gates at the Temple of Ur that used this principle of the hinge for balance so masterfully crafted they're almost as magnificent as something you'd see on an architectural display today!
