Eccentrics in mechanical engineering are circular disks affixed to rotating axles with their centers off-centered. Primarily used in steam engines, they convert rotational movements into linear reciprocation for sliding valves and pump rams. Eccentrics feature a groove around the circumference, where a closely fitted collar is attached to an eccentric rod. This setup allows for simple harmonic motion impartment at the other end of the rod. While return cranks can only function on axle ends or wheel outsides, eccentrics can be placed within axle bodies between wheels. Unlike cams, which provide almost any acceleration and deceleration rates, eccentrics and return cranks limit motion to simple harmonic oscillations.
