I'm a Mechanical Engineer working alongside a team from Tunisia to provide assistance on design parameters. COVID-19 patients requiring ventilator support are intubated. Depending on circumstances, they may breathe independently or not at all. These patients often suffer from ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), a type of diffuse lung injury. They need ventilators that deliver lung-protective ventilation to prevent further damage. The ventilator must administer a specific volume with limited peak and plateau pressure, as well as provide PEEP (positive end-expiratory pressure). A simple ventilator could serve as a temporary solution until a more advanced model becomes available. However, using two patients on one ventilator is highly problematic. Imagine the lung as a balloon: if both balloons have equal compliance, they may inflate equally with one straw. But if one lung stiffens due to ongoing failure while the other remains flexible, the healthier patient will receive excessive airflow, potentially causing damage, while the sicker patient loses vital ventilation.
