Design for a Basic Cubic Unit Cell The unit cell is a fundamental building block of crystalline solids. In this case, we're focusing on a simple cubic (sc) unit cell, which has six identical square faces that meet at right angles. This geometry provides the basis for many metals and some ionic compounds. For simplicity, let's assume our unit cell has dimensions of a × a × a, where "a" represents the length of each side. This makes the volume (V) of the unit cell equal to a³ cubic units.
