Basic Set of Pieces for Chess The standard game of chess is played with 32 pieces, consisting of six types: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The king is the most important piece on the board, as its capture results in an immediate loss of the game. The objective of the game is to checkmate your opponent's king so it cannot escape capture. The queen is the most powerful piece, able to move any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. It can also attack pieces that are on the same square as another piece. The rooks are the next most powerful piece, with the ability to move any number of squares along a rank or file, but they cannot jump over other pieces. The bishops are able to move any number of squares along a diagonal and have the unique ability to capture pieces that are on the same square as another piece. The knights are able to move in an L-shape, two squares in one direction then one square to the side. The pawns are able to move forward one square, but they can also capture diagonally one square. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The setup for a game of chess is standard, with the king on e1 and the queen on d1 for white and e8 and d8 for black.
