
Simple box with integral staggered hinge

This is a simple OPENSCAD design for a hinged box to store things in. As scaled presently, it will print a 82 mm x 34 mm x 20 mm small box with click-shut clasp and integrated open side hinge. For the hinge pin at this scale, the wire from a normal paper clip, cut to length, was used in the pictures prototype. (insert wire with care not to break the print). The pin is captive and does not require any fastener, threads, or end-stops. At larger scales, a section of strong filament might be used. In it's original un-scaled dimensions, the hing holes were designed to accept 3.0mm filament for pins. The purpose of this "Thing" is to provide a teaching example in the use of OpenScad code. If you adapt this code for any purpose including instruction, please provide attribution to this source. Slicing was done using the standard presents in CURA for the Ender 3 "Draft" profile (layer height = .2mm) Support are necessary for the outer sections of the hinge parts, but special care must be taken to apply a support block to the interior "hole" area of each hinge. The pictures example was printed with black PLA using a brim. After printing the brim and rought edges were removed with an x-acto knife. The tip of the x-actor was used to to clean out the interior of the clasp receiver slot of any printing artifacts. Cut pin material (e.g., paper clip wire) to length of hinge groove. Assemble by aligning top and bottom in closed position, paying special attention that the hinge sections and holes line up, then carefully slide the pin material into the hinge hole from outside in, using needle nose pliers if needed. Be careful not to damage hinge with too much pressure. If the fit is too tight, find a smaller diameter pin.
