A circle is a band, generally made of metal, worn as ornamental jewelry. The term "ring" by itself always refers to finger jewelry, but when worn elsewhere on the body, the location is always specified - earrings, neck rings, arm bands, and toe rings. Bands that fit loosely around the wrist are not rings, rather they're bracelets. Rings come in various hard materials like wood, bone, stone, metal, glass, or gemstone, often embedded with gemstones such as diamond, ruby, sapphire, or emerald, and sometimes made of other types of stones or glass. Although people wear some rings merely for show, others signify exceptional achievements, high status, authority, or membership in a group. Rings may have inscriptions to leave an impression on wax seals or be outfitted with tiny compartments for concealing small items. In fiction, myths, and fables, rings often hold spiritual significance. They've been discovered in ancient tombs like those found in Ur dating back to around 2500 BC. In ancient Egypt, signet rings were popular among the Hittites, though most have been lost. Egyptians produced various finger ring designs during their Middle Kingdom period with increasing complexity. Egyptians used both metal and faience to create jewelry, which they'd gift each other for New Year celebrations. However, after Greece and Rome gained power under Ptolemy, Native Egyptian styles gave way to those from Greece and Rome. During the classical period, Greeks made fewer rings due to their limited gold resources but mostly utilized silver. Romans primarily produced thick hoops tapering directly into slightly wider bezels embedding engraved oval gems. Rings during this period often had simple designs consisting of a circular bezel mounting an intaglio device - the type that Roman jewelers refer to as Henig II or III/Guiraud 2, featuring engraved gemstones on an ovoid frame, the bezel only slightly wider than the main body of the ring material. This fashion changed around the 4th and 5th centuries AD when elaborate rings became more prevalent in multiple combinations for each finger and hand. The primary materials for these elaborate rings were bronze, silver, or gold. It wasn't until around 1150 that people began using precious gems which also brought along beliefs that certain stones could provide protection or aid the wearer. From the 13th century onward, contracts increased requiring formal seals which made signet rings a staple for sealing important documents. The tradition of wearing a wedding ring on the left hand's fourth finger dates back thousands of years with evidence dating back to ancient civilizations in Greece and Rome as far back as BC. While some cultures wear wedding bands on the right hand finger instead. Historians believe that an ancient myth or belief in this practice comes from an ancient Egyptian and Roman belief which suggests a direct vein connects the fourth finger to the heart; often cited is an old vein known as the 'vein of love'. At times rings are recycled, hung onto necklaces, or converted into wrist jewelry.
