In November 2016, the Bohuslän Museum conducted an archaeological investigation of the remains of a herring salterie/distillery (Göteborg 367) on Lilla Aspholmen in Göteborg. The remains can be linked to two individual coastal works known as the archipelago workshops that were constructed on Lilla Aspholmen around the turn of the century 1800. This type of fish processing industry emerged due to a period of unusually abundant herring supply in Bohuslän, which lasted from the mid-1700s until a few years into the next century. The processing involved both salted herring as food and as cod liver oil for fuel, lubricant, and more.\nClient: Bohuslän Museum.\nPhoto & 3D Model: Anders Gutehall.
