Silenus
myminifactory
In Greek mythology, Silenus acted as a trusted companion and educator to the wine god Dionysus. Typically, he is older than the satyrs that accompany Dionysus in his retinue (thiasos), and sometimes significantly older, whereupon he may be referred to as a Papposilenus. The plural form sileni refers to this mythological figure as a type that is often thought to have attributes different from those of a satyr, such as being associated with horses rather than goats, though usage of the two words varies and does not allow for a clear distinction. This marble head was likely hung on a wall in a dining room (triclinium).
