Igor Sikorsky's creation, the S42, was among the first successful commercial seaplanes for passengers, featuring four unpressurized radial engines with tractor-mounted propellers and a pylon-mounted wing. It could accommodate 37 passengers and four crew members or 14 in cargo configuration. The S42 served Pan Am, becoming the first aircraft to visit Hawaii; its last iteration was retired in 1946.
