Rocks in a streambed were dragged down, melted like molten lava, stretched out, and then hardened into solid stone. Millions of years later, glaciers covered this spot with a thick layer of ice that gradually slid down the canyon, smoothing off the rocks by pushing heavy ice and gravel across their surfaces under its immense weight. Next, ten thousand years of weathering wore away the surface, leaving behind deep pits and grooves between the hard, polished granite faces.
