A siege tower or belfry is a specialized siege engine used in medieval warfare. Constructed as a rectangular structure on four wheels with a height comparable to the defensive walls, it protected assailants and ladders while approaching enemy fortifications. Often adorned with non-flammable iron or animal skin coverings, the tower might feature archers on top to shoot arrows into the opposition. Used since 11th century BC by Babylonians and Assyrians in the ancient Near East, siege towers were employed from the 4th century BC in Europe and antiquity Far East. Often constructed at siege sites, these large structures took considerable time to build and were used when ladder assault, mining, or breaking walls/gates were unsuccessful. They housed various armed forces, including spearmen, pikemen, swordsmen, archers, and crossbowmen. Despite being a prime target for large stone catapults, siege towers had their own projectiles to retaliate. Siege towers were instrumental in getting troops over enemy curtain walls by lowering a gangplank between the tower and the wall. Troops could then rush onto the walls and into the castle or city.
