Germany's Wehrmacht operated a fleet of shallow-draft catamaran landing crafts called Siebelfähre during World War II. These versatile vessels played multiple roles (transport, gunboat, convoy escort, minelayer, flak ship) in the Mediterranean, Baltic and Black Seas as well as along the English Channel. Initially designed for Operation Sea Lion in 1940, the ill-fated German invasion of England, Siebel ferries continued to serve with distinction even after the war's end in 1945.
