The stock spool holder that comes with the X1 falls short of expectations. For me, it caused an unacceptable amount of resistance, pulling the extruder up slightly and resulting in noticeable layer variation. So I created a custom solution with two interchangeable options for the main bracket. Option 1 features a spool holder assembly utilizing skateboard bearings for extremely low resistance. Although there's a possibility that the resistance could be so low it causes the spool to unwind too easily, I've yet to encounter any issues. Option 2 is a simpler basic holder offering a slight amount of resistance, still a significant improvement over the stock option. Two skate bearings with an 8mm inside diameter and 22mm outside diameter are required. To install this design, you can use the existing hardware from the old holder on the backside, but mounting it on both sides provides greater stability. I recommend using 5mm T-nuts with 10mm long screws. This custom spool holder is not limited to the X1; it can also be used on other 20mm extrusion machines.
