The AIM-9 Sidewinder, a short-range air-to-air missile, was initially developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s at China Lake, California. After its development, the U.S. Air Force procured this missile. While many Sidewinder variants employ infrared homing for guidance, the AIM-9C version featured semi-active radar homing and served as the foundation for the AGM-122 Sidearm anti-radar missile. The Sidewinder is the most extensively used missile in the West with over 110,000 units produced for the U.S. and 27 other countries. As one of the oldest, least expensive, and most successful air-to-air missiles, the AIM-9 remains highly sought after.
