In the mid-1960s, SIAI-Marchetti created a five-seater that closely resembled its S.205 four-seater light aircraft but was powered by a significantly more powerful engine. The prototype of this new aircraft, named S.208, took to the skies for the first time on May 22, 1967. A low-wing monoplane built entirely from metal with a single engine, it rolled off assembly lines in massive quantities starting in the spring of 1968 and within five years some eighty were produced, with more than half being destined for the Air Force as part of the S.208M version (U-208A aeronautical nomenclature). This aircraft was primarily used by the Air Force for connections and training purposes. Although it also handled civil tasks such as sanitary work, freight transport and agricultural duties in its S.208AG guise, the primary difference between this model and the civilian variant lay in its instrumentation, which had been modified to accommodate military requirements. Additionally, the version intended for the Armed Forces featured two doors at the pilot position, a hook for towing gliders and no wingtip tanks. Today, it is utilized by connecting squadrons and the 60 ° Stormo for towing glider operations.
