I was deeply saddened by the retirement of NASA's shuttle program, but I'm hopeful that greater things will soon take its place. It's essential that humans constantly remind themselves of our place among the stars. We need a strong drive to push the boundaries of space exploration to ensure our very survival. I created the design after reading Chris Hadfield's book An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. I was captivated by his account of his first launch. Walking out to the launch pad for flight in 1995 on the shuttle Atlantis, he felt a surreal sense that he would be joining one of only a handful of humans who have ever left our planet.
