Shuriken Set Model for 3D Print A shuriken is a Japanese concealed weapon that was used as a hidden dagger or Metsubushi to distract or misdirect. Shurikens came in many different forms; some were made from tools while others were manufactured. The edges of Shurikens were often sharpened so they could penetrate skin or open arteries. Shuriken are commonly known in the West as throwing stars or ninja stars although they were originally designed in various shapes. There are two major varieties of shuriken: the Bō Shuriken, a stick-shaped Shuriken, and the Hira Shuriken, a flat-shaped Shuriken, also known as shaken, which is sometimes read as kurumaken, meaning wheel Shuriken. Shuriken were used alongside swords or other weapons in a samurai's arsenal but had a significant impact on battles. The art of wielding shuriken is called shurikenjutsu and was taught as part of martial arts curricula in famous schools such as Yagyū Shinkage-ryū, Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū, Ittō-ryū, Kukishin-ryū, and Togakure-ryū.
