Shunted heart in technicolor

Tet-type DORV patients often require a RmBT shunt to correct their condition. Oxygen-rich blood from the lungs enters the left atrium, while de-oxygenated blood from the body flows into the right atrium. Due to pulmonary atresia and an overriding aorta, both blue and red blood streams are pumped out of the aorta, creating a unique cardiac output that's partially oxygenated - resulting in a purple hue. Some of this blended blood is redirected to the lungs via the shunt for further oxygenation, while the rest supplies the brain and body with a mixed circulation.
