Shulk Sword With Lighted Monado
thingiverse
My son decided that he wanted to dress up as Shulk for Halloween, so I set out to create the perfect costume. The key to the costume is Shulk's massive sword, which is a crucial part of his character. To make it, I used a 2x2x1 inch insulation foam board from Home Depot, which turned out to be the ideal material. The centerpiece of the sword is its lit power symbol, but carving it into the foam was way beyond my skill level. So, I decided to design and print it instead. The lights are simply a short string of battery-powered white or blue Christmas lights coiled up inside a cover that friction fits into the speed symbol. This entire assembly is then friction fitted into a circular hole in the sword, while the battery pack is securely taped to the exterior. Using ecsaul23's excellent sword template from Instructables was a huge help (thanks, Ecsaul23!). Instead of paint, I covered the sword with red duct tape, which really sped up the build time. Including shopping for foam board, tape and lights, this project took me two evenings to complete, totaling around $10. I'm pretty sure that this design would work well on a larger or smaller scale, so feel free to give it a try! If you're short on time, buying an off-the-shelf sword can be pricey - about $180. But with my DIY method, you'll save money and have your costume ready in no time. Good luck, and Happy Halloween!
