Airborne coverings designed to shield the blower assembly from dust and debris are generally referred to as fan shrouds. The primary purpose of this device is to capture dirt particles and keep them away from moving components that may suffer if they get into their mechanisms, resulting in costly repair or replacement. Fan guards may be seen on some units but most systems prefer an additional covering over the assembly which they often refer to simply as a "fan shroud".
