Shorter belts using a belt tensioner
thingiverse
To optimize your 3D printer's X & Y belt length, use a zip tie tensioner along with another half of belt from an old printer or scanner. Ensure the tensioner doesn't cross idlers on either side. To find the right length, fold the belt at the axis mount point and adjust accordingly. This solution works well for various 3D printer designs.
