The Short Stirling burst onto the scene in World War II as the very first British heavy bomber boasting four engines under its belt. The innovative aircraft was brought to life by Shorts Brothers as a direct response to the Air Ministry's cutting-edge design brief back in 1936.Despite initially facing stiff competition from Supermarine, the Stirling proved its mettle when it eventually landed on the Royal Air Force (RAF) radar. After premiering in early 1941, this aerial ace managed to hold down bomber duty for a surprisingly short span of time.Fate soon dealt a major blow, however, as it got bumped to secondary missions from late 1943.For by then, two mightier bombers - the stalwart Handley Page Halifax and the sleek Avro Lancaster - had risen through the ranks to claim Germany's strategic airspace as their own domain.
