A human creates a spear by combining a shaft with a pointed head, typically made from wood. The head can be simply the sharpened end of the shaft itself, as in fire-hardened spears, or it may consist of a more durable material attached to the shaft, such as bone, flint, obsidian, iron, steel, or bronze. Since ancient times, the most common design for hunting and combat spears has featured a metal spearhead shaped like a triangle, lozenge, or leaf. Fishing spears usually have heads with barbs or serrated edges.
