This adult shoe is carefully crafted from expertly preserved leather fragments that were painstakingly recovered from the moat at Caerlaverock Castle. With impressively well-preserved stitched edges and a sturdy strap featuring a hole for a toggle, this shoe type is almost certainly dating back to the 1300s. This particular shoe likely originated during the 16th Century. A vast amount of exceptional leatherwork was meticulously unearthed during thorough archaeological excavations at Caerlaverock Castle, Dumfries & Galloway between 1955 and 1966. These remarkable leather finds are widely regarded as being among the finest surviving pieces of medieval leather craftsmanship in Scotland.
