A motion smoother or decelerator is a mechanical or hydraulic device engineered to capture and slow down shock impulses. It achieves this by transforming the kinetic energy of the shock into another type of energy (usually heat) that's then released. Most motion smoothers are a form of dashpot, a decelerator that resists movement via viscous friction.
