A shock absorber, in essence a shock "damping" component, is a mechanical or hydraulic apparatus engineered to assuage and attenuate abrupt shock impulses. It operates by transforming the kinetic energy of the impact into another kind of energy (commonly heat) which is subsequently dispersed. Generally, shock absorbers are a variant of dashpots, devices that impede motion through viscous friction.
