Ship's timber from Itchenor, West Sussex

The timber was lifted after fouling a deep water mooring, revealing its original 1 foot square shape and copper sheathing on three faces. Clearly, it came from beneath a ship's structure, probably part of the keel or stern post. Multiple copper alloy bolts remain in place, while visible wooden 'tree nails' also tell their own story. Given the presence of copper alloy fittings, it's likely to date back between the late 1700s and early 1800s - a time when warships were built and dismantled on site. Further research is underway to uncover more details about this piece of history, currently displayed for public viewing outside the Harbour Office at Itchenor.
