Shiftknob Schaltknauf for BMW e46
thingiverse
I designed it in 2016 during my apprenticeship, the original one from BMW was pretty worn out and so I decided to make my own one. It's smaller in height but also wider so it fits better in my hand. It is also knurled to have more grip. The one on the pictures is made out of aluminum. The problem with aluminum is that it's COLD in winter, I'm not joking, and even worse in summer you simply can't touch it when the car stands in the sun. The BMW sign on it is from a BMW motorcycle that was customized so it fits flush as an inlay. One thing that's not in the file is a slot that should fit on the lever so it doesn't rotate. I damaged mine, so it's simply not there. I used rubber bands to hold it in place. You can use the .ipt to customize it as you like. Edit 11/12/2019: I printed it out and it fits very tight, so you don't need to use anything to hold it in place. I saw a mistake somewhere and it's shorter than the original, but if you need it longer, you could edit it in the .ipt data. In my apprenticeship, we had an extremely long break between exams, and since I'd been annoyed with the shift knob for a long time, I decided to design my own. I made it smaller and wider than the standard E46 shift knob so it fits better in the hand. The one on the pictures has knurling so you don't slip off. On the pictures, the shift knob is made of aluminum. The problem with that is that your hands will freeze off in winter - no joke - and in the summer when it's standing in the sun, you'll want to call an emergency doctor because your hand will burn. The emblem is from a BMW motorcycle, specifically a 1100GS, and I got it from the internet for a very low price. The diameter is around 39.5mm. I also attached a file without an inlay. One thing that's not included is a detent pin to prevent it from rotating. Unfortunately, mine is damaged, so it's just not there. But I've managed with rubber bands so far. You can customize the file as needed. Edit 11/12/2019: I noticed that Autodesk was still set to CM and the STL looked too small, so I changed it again. Now everything fits perfectly. Edit: I tried it out on my car and it fit exactly on the gearshift and sits very snugly. I also noticed that it's 5mm shorter than the original, but you can make it longer if needed.
