Shift/Brake/Hydraulic Cable Guide (frame-mounted)
thingiverse
Fully enclosed guide for shift/brake/hydraulic cable housing. Requires a small zip tie. To secure it firmly in place, apply some hot glue to the area that sits on your frame. Allow it to cool slightly before pressing it onto your frame to achieve the desired curvature. This will leave a friction-rich area to prevent it from sliding around even with the zip tie, which can be easily removed and reapplied when needed. How I Designed This I designed this shift cable housing with a 4.17 mm diameter, scaling it up by 115% to compensate for its tendency to shrink. To create a snug fit on standard round steel tubing, I measured the tubes on my 1985 road bike and calculated an average of 27.81 mm for a generic tube. The zip tie dimensions were also scaled up by 115%, from 1 mm thick and 2.55 mm wide. This design is functionally similar to the Origin8 Plastic Cable Guides available on Amazon, but with a few key differences. The brake version relies on a 4.95 mm diameter brake cable housing, while the hydraulic version uses a 4.97 mm diameter Shimano hydraulic line. Future Improvements A future improvement could be adding a small cutout for the cable to snap in and out of the guide. However, I'm not confident that the 3D printed material can withstand this repeated stress without breaking down after a few uses. Using an elastic filament might solve this issue, but I'd rather leave that experiment to someone else.
