Part of a storied collection, the Unst Community Museum proudly showcases the island's long history as a hub for one of the world's most bountiful fishing grounds. For centuries, small wooden boats braved the waves to catch cod and ling, which were swiftly cleaned, split, salted, and dried on the rocky beaches. The dried fish were then shipped abroad in massive quantities, earning Unst a reputation as a premier fishing destination. Boats like the sixereen "FAR HAAF" could venture thirty miles off shore, while sturdy fourereens fished closer to the coast, reaping a rich harvest. However, the sudden onset of storms often proved disastrous for these brave fishermen.
