The Sherman Firefly was a World War II British variant of the American Sherman tank, boasting the potent British 17-pounder anti-tank gun as its primary weapon. Originally devised as an interim solution until future British tanks emerged, the Firefly became the most prevalent vehicle equipped with the 17-pounder during WWII. After overcoming the challenge of fitting the gun into the Sherman's turret, production commenced in early 1944, equipping Field Marshal Montgomery's forces for the Normandy landings. The Firefly was highly valued as the sole British tank capable of neutralizing Panther and Tiger tanks at conventional combat distances, leading to its priority target status among German tank and anti-tank crews. Between 2100 and 2200 units were manufactured before production ceased in 1945.
