Originally designed to serve as a temporary solution until future British tank designs came into service, the Sherman Firefly became the most common vehicle equipped with the 17 pounder in World War II. After resolving the issue of fitting the gun within the Sherman's turret, production of the Firefly began in early 1944, just in time to equip Field Marshal Montgomery's forces for the Normandy landings. Soon recognized as the only British tank capable of defeating Panther and Tiger tanks at standard combat ranges in Normandy, German tank and anti-tank gun crews were instructed to target Fireflies first.
